Desecularising the State

THE announcement by the Gujarat education minister that the Bhagavad Gita would be taught in schools as part of the syllabus for class 6 to class 12 students from the academic year 2022-23, is a flagrant breach of the secular principle of the State. It is a fundamental principle of all secular States that State-run schools do not impart religious instruction of any sort.  The United States, France, Japan and a host of other countries follow this principle.

Ukraine and the Global Economic War: Barbarism or Civilisation?

DOES the Ukraine war and the action of the US, EU, and the UK spell the end of the dollar as the world's reserve currency? Even if the peace talks between Russia and Ukraine reach a 15-point peace plan, as Financial Times has reported, the fallout for the dollar still remains. Milk Producers Hold Demonstration

HUNDREDS of milk producers under the banner of Himachal Pradesh Dudh Utpadak Sangh(Milk Producers Association) held a massive demonstration in Duttnagar, in Rampur subdivision, under Shimla district. On March 7, the milk producers, mostly women, gathered in front of the Duttnagar office of Himachal Milk Processing Centre and submitted a memorandum through the sub-divisional officer to the chief minister of the state.

GABRIEL Boric took oath as the president of Chile on March 11. This marks the ushering of a new chapter in the history of Chile.Boric is the youngest president of Chile, elected at the age of 35 years (the minimum age required to contest for presidency). He represents the alliance, Apruebo Dignidad, which includes Boric’s party Frente Amplio (Broad Front), the Communist Party of Chile and other smaller social movements. After Salvador Allende, Boric is the first to win the election in alliance with the Communist Party.Along with Boric, his new cabinet also assumed office on March 11.

Aijaz Ahmad: A Warrior for Marxism

PROFESSOR Aijaz Ahmad, who passed away last week in Irvine, California, was one of the foremost Marxist intellectuals of our times.  His significance as a Marxist theoretician came to prominence in the period after the retreat of socialism in the late 1980s and which led to the dismantling of the Soviet Union in 1991.His erudition and talents were wide-ranging. He began his work as an Urdu writer and literary critic.
