Power Sector Employees Strike on June 26

THE Southern Region Meeting of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) was held in Chennai on March 16, 2025. The meeting was inaugurated by PN Chowdhury, Convener of NCCOEEE, who presented a detailed note on the current state of the electricity sector for discussion.In his address, Chowdhury recounted the history and struggles of NCCOEEE since its formation in 2000, particularly its opposition to the Electricity Bill 2000, which sought to privatise State Electricity Boards (SEBs).

National Conference of EEFI Vows to Resist Privatisation, Strengthen Workers’ Rights

THE electricity employees will not allow the central and state governments to advance an inch further in their privatisation agenda! Their resistance will be indomitable in the coming days, as evidenced by two national strikes in the electricity sector within two months. This was the clear message from the 10th National Conference of the Electricity Employees Federation of India (EEFI) that was held from March 10-12, 2025, in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.

Karnataka: CITU's Five-Day Protest in Bangalore Over Labour Rights

OVER 30,000 workers from Karnataka's diverse working class, including domestic helpers, street vendors, and skilled professionals from industries like aerospace and IT, mobilised in Bangalore from March 3 to 7. Organised by the Karnataka state committee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), the five-day demonstration at Freedom Park saw participants raise 37 demands, such as a living minimum wage of Rs 31,566 for unskilled workers, with a 15 per cent premium for higher skill levels, adjusted to the price index.

CITU Demands War-Footing Rescue for Trapped Migrant Workers in Telangana Tunnel

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), in a statement issued on February 25, has urged the Telangana state government to intensify rescue operations on a war footing to save the eight trapped migrant workers in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel. CITU also demanded that the contractor be blacklisted for criminal negligence in failing to ensure workplace safety.The incident of water, mud, and silt flooding the tunnel is not an unforeseen occurrence; such risks are typically anticipated, and preventive measures are usually taken well in advance.

THE Modi led NDA government reportedly intends to notify the Labour Codes, probably in April 2025, and has started preparations for this. Soon after coming to power for the second time in 2019, the Modi government identified the so-called ‘Labour law reforms’ as one of its top-most priorities. It merged 29 existing labour laws into four Labour Codes and utilising its majority, got them passed in Parliament in 2019-20.

National Convention on Safety in Railways

THE Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) organised a national convention on ‘Safety in Indian Railways’ on December 20, 2024 at HKS Surjeet Bhawan, New Delhi. More than 200 CITU activists and cadres from 16 states along with several members of railway unions participated in the convention, which was held as per the decision of the CITU general council held in Kolkata in August 2024.The national convention was presided over by Hemalata, President, CITU.

Two CITU Railway Unions Win Recognition in Railway Secret Ballot Election

FOLLOWING a Delhi High Court order to conduct a secret ballot election for the recognition of railway trade unions (i.e., verification of membership in Indian Railways) in a case filed by the Dakshin Railway Employees Union (DREU) in Southern Railway, an affiliate of Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), elections were held on December 4, 5, and 6, 2024.
