Comrade Sivadasa Menon

SENIOR CPI(M) leader and former minister, Comrade T Sivadasa Menon passed away on June 28. He was 90 years old and was undergoing treatment in a hospital near Kozhikode for pneumonia. He served as a member of the CPI(M) state committee and state secretariat and secretary of the Palakkad district committee. He also served as minister of electricity and rural development in the E K Nayanar-led ministry, during 1987- 1991. He was minister for finance in the Nayanar ministry during 1996- 2001. He won twice from the Malampuzha assembly constituency.

Rush Relief: Devastating Floods in Assam

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on June 25THE devastating floods in Assam have taken a heavy toll of human life and property in both the Brahmaputra valley and the Barak valley. Over 60 lakh people in 32 out of the 35 districts are battling for survival. Over a hundred have unfortunately lost their lives. Over 1.08 lakh hectares of crop land have submerged and over 2000 kms of roads have been badly damaged. Thousands of livestock perished.The BJP led governments, both union and the state have miserably failed to tackle the flood situation.

Will Monkeypox See a Replay of AIDS and Covid-19?

WITH more than 4,000 cases (as on June 30, 2022), the recent outbreak of monkeypox in Europe and North America has become international news. World Health Organisation (WHO) has reacted by monitoring the progress of monkeypox globally and issuing guidelines regarding testing, and taking immediate measures. But WHO has not yet declared monkeypox a public health emergency.As long as monkeypox was confined to Africa, where similar outbreaks have been happening in Central and West Africa for years, it raised little concern.
