HP: Farmers Fight to Protect Their Land Amidst Growing Development Challenges

UNDER the banner of Himachal Kisan Sabha, the farmers of Himachal Pradesh are continuously fighting to protect their agricultural land. Agriculture-horticulture is the main means of livelihood for 69 per cent of the more than 90 per cent rural population of the state, which plays an important role in the state's economy. Although agricultural land constitutes only 10.4 per cent of the state's area, the sector contributes 22.1 per cent to the state's gross domestic product.

Comrade Kantimohan

COMRADE Kantimohan Sharma, one of the founding members of the editorial team of Loklahar and the Democratic Writers Association, passed away on July 14 at a hospital in Noida. Coincidentally, it was also his birthday. Since the night of July 13, he had been on a ventilator. Comrade Kantimohan had been ill for a long time, and with advancing age, heart disease and other illnesses had afflicted him. He was 88 years old.Kantimohan retired from the position of a reader at Satyawati College, Delhi University, in 1996.

Tripura: COMRADE SAMAR ADHYA

COMRADE Samar Adhya, a prominent leader of the state’s Left movement, former member of the CPI(M) Tripura state committee, and currently the cashier of the state committee of the Party, passed away on July 27, 2024, in a private hospital in Agartala. On July 24, he performed his normal duties throughout the day at the office. However, in the evening, he suffered a cerebral stroke at his residence. He was immediately taken to ILS Hospital, where doctors urgently performed brain surgery on him.

Supreme Court Permits the Sub-classification of Scheduled Castes

CPI(M) Polit Bureau has issued the following statement on August 1

A SEVEN-Judge bench of the Supreme Court (by 6-1) held that sub classification of Scheduled Castes is permissible. The Supreme Court also permitted separate quotas for more backwards within the SC categories. The Supreme Court directed that the State has to justify the sub-classification on the basis of empirical data regarding the inadequacy of representation of the sub-class.

In this village, even today, if a person does not attend meetings, the powerful people of the village punish him by imposing hefty fines. In May 2024, during the Baisakhi fair, drummer, Pushkar Lal was ordered by these bullies to play the drums all night despite being ill.

Why No Census?

THE decadal census, which was due in 2021, has not been held so far. In the union budget 2024-25, no substantial provision has been made for conducting the census. The centre has also not extended the deadline of June 2024 to freeze administrative boundaries which are necessary to conduct the census as per the administrative boundaries like districts, taluk, block or village levels.So the 2021 census, which should have begun in 2020, is indefinitely delayed.

What We Can Learn from the Global Microsoft Outage?

A GLOBAL IT outage on July 19th, 2024, affected more than 8.5 Million Microsoft computers worldwide, disrupting airlines, hospitals, banks, train services, and even government agencies. The outage was caused by a faulty update from the cybersecurity provider, CrowdStrike, which caused Microsoft Windows machines to crash and get stuck in the infamous “blue screen of death” booting loop.

Agricultural and allied sector allocations have continuously declined from 5.44 per cent in 2019 to 3.15 per cent currently, with a 21.2 per cent decrease compared to 2022-23. No measures ensure assured crop procurement at C2+50 per cent, and there is no increase in allocations for MGNREGA, PM-KISAN, and PMFBY over Interim Budget.
