THE Eighth State Conference of Uttarakhand committee of CPI(M) was held at Karnaprayag from December 22-24, 2024. The conference began with an impressive rally and a well-attended public meeting. In total, 22 members of the state committee, 142 delegates and 13 observers attended the conference which also included 23 women delegates. State secretaries of CPI and CPI(ML) greeted the conference. On behalf of the Central Committee of the Party, Polit Bureau member Tapan Sen and Central Committee member Vijoo Krishnan attended the conference.

THE 17th State Conference of CPI(M) Madhya Pradesh was held from December 15-17 in the town of Mhow in Indore district. The conference was hosted by the smallest unit of the Party in Madhya Pradesh, where the majority of members are tribal and landless agricultural workers. THE Eighth Chhattisgarh State Conference of CPI(M) was held on December 19-20, 2024 in in Vishrampur, a coal-belt area in the tribal region of Surajpur district. The venue was named as Sitaram Yechury Nagar and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya-Basudev Acharya Manch. The conference began with the hoisting of the Party flag by Gajendra Jha, the oldest delegate at 83 years of age, followed by floral tributes at the martyr's column.The conference was presided over by a three-member presidium comprising Rishi Gupta, S C Bhattacharya, and R V Bharati.

Trump’s Threat of a Tariff Wall

DONALD Trump is threatening to use tariffs as a weapon against other countries. He has already made three threatening statements: first, he threatened the BRICS countries that if they dared to move away from the dollar, then they would have to face 100 per cent tariff in the US market. Second, he has threatened the European Union that unless the EU bought more American oil and gas as a means of reducing its trade surplus vis-à-vis the US (the surplus on goods trade was $208.7 billion in 2023), it would face high tariffs in the US market.

The Week in Parliament

BOTH Houses of Parliament were adjourned sine die on December 20 amid protests by MPs of the Opposition bloc over Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks on B R Ambedkar and other issues. Before the Houses were adjourned, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Tuesday introduced the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill, 2024 and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024 – the two Bills for the conduct of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously – in the Lok Sabha. The Bills saw intense debate in the House, with 269 members voting in its favour and 198 members opposed.

MAYOTTE, just north of Madagascar, has been part of the overseas French empire since 1843, continues to exist as an ‘overseas territory’ despite the irresistible anti-colonial hunger. France, apart from most of the other European colonial powers, continues to hold large parts of the world under its dominion (from French Guiana in South America to New Caledonia in the Southwest Pacific Ocean. Many of these overseas territories are small islands, which had provided bases and coaling stations to the French navy when it commanded larger territories, such as Indochina and French West Africa.
