The Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has issued the following statement on September 5. THE Polit Bureau expresses deep concern at the havoc caused by heavy floods in Jammu and Kashmir. Several districts in Jammu and in the valley have been very badly affected by the incessant rain and the rising waters of the rivers to alarming levels. Many precious lives have been lost and property damaged and cattle killed. Thousands of people have been rendered homeless in both regions. Although the state government and the army have moved in to provide rescue and relief operations much more needs to be done. Reports suggest that certain villages in south Kashmir are submerged. Rescue operations need to be conducted immediately to save precious lives. The central government must immediately rush relief to the affected areas. People have to be assured that full compensation for their losses will be given to them. The CPI(M) offers its condolences and sympathy to the bereaved families.
